Overview & Highlights

Mei Wah Takeaways, nestled on 660 Great King Street North in Dunedin, is a beloved gem for those craving authentic Chinese dishes alongside classic fish and chips. As a longtime staple in North Dunedin, Mei Wah expertly bridges the comforting familiarity of a local takeaway with a genuine taste of Chinese cuisine, making it an essential culinary stop for students, locals, and visitors alike.

The menu showcases an impressive variety of chow mein options — from tender Chicken Chow Mein to the rich, savory Beef and Pork Chow Mein, and the fresh, succulent Prawn Chow Mein, each dish bursting with vibrant flavors and perfectly balanced seasonings. If you’re a fan of seafood, the prawn selection is particularly enticing, featuring dishes like Prawn Curry, Prawn Black Bean Sauce, and Prawn with Cashew Nuts, promising a delightful mix of spice, sweetness, and crunch that dances elegantly on the palate.

Mei Wah’s fish and chips, frequently praised by the community, are a standout for their crispy texture and satisfying flavor. Several customers have raved about the perfectly light batter enveloping their fish, maintaining a delicate balance that lets the freshness of the fish shine through without overwhelming it. The chips, golden and with a gratifying crunch, complement the fish impeccably and make for a hearty, no-fuss meal. Portion sizes are generous, with one dish often enough to satisfy two hungry diners—a fact that customers appreciate deeply.

The atmosphere is distinctly that of a friendly, no-frills takeaway spot that values substance over style. There’s limited space to dine in, which adds to the allure of grabbing something delicious and heading out—ideal for busy students or anyone on the go. The welcoming hospitality shines through, as many patrons describe the staff as warm, friendly, and always ready to make you feel at home.

One customer fondly recalls Mei Wah as a comforting piece of their university days, highlighting the freshness, taste, and sizable portions that made it a reliable go-to spot during hectic lunch breaks. Others highlight the incredible value for money and the satisfying portions that keep them coming back. From flavorful chow mein to their much-loved sweet and sour pork, the food consistently delivers a comforting meal experience that sticks with you long after the last bite.

Whether you're craving a steaming plate of noodles, a generous serving of crispy fish and chips, or a bold prawn curry, Mei Wah Takeaways offers a soulful, satisfying dining experience that truly reflects the heart of Dunedin’s multicultural food scene. Their commitment to quality, flavor, and approachable prices has rightly earned them a loyal following—one bite here feels like a warm embrace from an old friend.

Great chinese food - did not try the fish and chips. I had the sweet and sour pork + egg fried rice. Very generous size for the price, a single dish is enough for two people. Not a lot of place to dine in so best for takeaway

Outstanding quality, price & service. Best fish & chips we’ve had in a very long time. Thank you Mei Wah.

I love The Staff . They are Always friendly. Welcoming. Best Sweet Sour Pork ever had. Rice so fresh Lunch special $7 dollars small Large $10 . Awesome.

In 2009, when I first arrived in New Zealand, Chinese food in North Dunedin was hard to find. Mei Wah was the very first Chinese takeaway I ever tried. I'll never forget those hungry lunchtimes when I'd run to their shop to order fried rice, fish and chips, or Beef Tofu on Rice. Their food always fresh, tasty and decent portion. Mei Wah is more than just a shop to me; it's a sweet part of my university memories. Every time I go back to Dunedin to visit friends, I order at least four servings of the Beef Tofu on Rice to take back with me to Christchurch. That dish instantly takes me back to those beautiful university days.

bes place to eat when u need quantity/taste/value. get the chow mein/fried rice if ur reaaallyy hungry. burgers taste amazing. i got both. reminds me of a takeaway in auckland, just a chill storefront with some steel furniture lmaoo. food tastes great duh
